Depending on the floor finish that will be installed depends on the floor grinding process that is needed for the floor surface preparation. Below are two examples of final floor surfaces and the floor grinding procedure that is needed for the best floor performance and durability over the life of the floor.
How to prepare a concrete floor for a painted floor finish - When painting a concrete floor as a final floor finish, the concrete needs to be prepared so the paint will adhere to the floor permanently. Concrete Reflections Inc. floor preparation procedure for this type of floor is similar to sanding wood in preparation for painting. Concrete grinding involves grinding the concrete floor with grinding machines and tools leaving an even, uniformed profile. The grinding of the concrete will also naturally clean the floor as it grinds down to virgin concrete. Once completed the surface is ready for painting and because of the grinding it will create a porous surface by opening up the pours, allowing the paint to adhere and prevents premature peeling and wear.
How to prepare a concrete floor for concrete polishing and staining - Concrete polishing and staining are growing in popularity as the ideal floor finish. When installing a polished and stain floor on an old concrete slab, the floor must be prepared properly. Concrete Reflections Inc. starts this process by using aggressive grit diamonds on the bottom of a grinding machine. The grit of the diamonds depends on the floor and the type of coatings that need to be removed. The grinding will cut through coatings, glue, mastic, mortar and old layers of concrete to expose virgin concrete. Once the virgin concrete is exposed the floor is then ready for further polishing, which will remove scratches created by the grinding, and an acid stain will be applied for color.
