What is concrete grinding? Concrete grinding is the removal of concrete for the purpose of treating the concrete in order to install a flooring system or prepare the concrete for its final state. The term concrete grinding is broad and applies to a number of specific services that use specific machines and tools. Concrete Reflections Inc., one of the nation's leaders in concrete polishing and grinding, services the New Hampshire and New England area in a variety of concrete grinding services. Below describes the services of grinding, scarrifying, scabbling, milling, etching, coating removal and shot blasting in which Concrete Reflections Inc. offers within their menu of services for concrete grinding and polishing.
Concrete Grinding - Concrete grinding is the method of removing concrete with the use of concrete grinding machines and diamond impregnated disks or carbide abrasives. The disks are installed to the bottom of the grinding machine and the disks spin on the floor, grinding it down to the desired level.
Scarrifying - If the concrete needs to be leveled or removed quickly and aggressively then it needs to be scarrified. Scarrifying is accomplished with a scarrifier machine, this machine has a drum that spins in a circle on the concrete. Scattered throughout the entire drum are star bits or carbide star bits and the bit size depends on aggression desired. The drum is then placed on the floor and chips away at the uneven surface until it is flush.
Scabbling - In concrete grinding, scabbling is used to break up the concrete in small pieces. A Scabblier machine consists of numerous rods tipped with steel or carbide, these rods rapidly pound simultaneously on the concrete surface removing it in small pieces.
Milling - Milling is a concrete grinding process used to even out the edge of a concrete surface in order to make it even with the adjacent surface. A scarrifyer machine is typically used for this process.
Etching - Etching is usually required in order to prepare a concrete surface for a coating, such as epoxy, paint or staining a concrete polished floor. There are a number of methods or combinations of methods that can be used to etch a concrete surface. Some of them are mechanical methods used to grind the concrete, but the most common and most frequent method of operation is the application of acids.
Coating Removal - Coating removal is executed by removing a coating that exists on the concrete such as paint, epoxy, sealers or wax. These coatings can be removed by acids, scabbling, concrete grinding, shot blasting, or milling, depending on the type of coating determines what type of concrete grinding method is applied.
Shot Blasting - Shot blasting involves the chipping of the concrete surface. This method is accomplished by the use of a shot blaster. A shot blaster shoots a large number of small steel balls onto the concrete surface continuously, as the balls hit the surface the concrete is chipped away evenly.
